30 AUGUST 2005

That that was lost is found........................

The things that I shed upon returning home, after clothing, are my earrings. Sometimes I don't immediately put them in their assigned spot. I have learned to always return them to the jewelry box.

Last week, I noticed that one of my 14k gold, loveknot earrings (embellished with a tiny, center diamond) was not with its mate on the parson's table next to my bedroom chair. I moved everything and, of course, checked the floor. I can hear my mother now, "Did you look on the floor?" All of my efforts met failure - no lost earring. I found myself visually scouring all of the floors - bedroom, bathroom hall, living room and kitchen. The hunt gave me the perfect excuse to delay vacuuming. But, I was resigned to its permanent loss.

Then, on Saturday, while going from the bedroom to the kitchen, I passed the opened bathroom door. I was startled by McCullough tearing out of the bathroom and zooming into the bedroom. I immediately thought that there was too much purpose in her streak and reversed my steps. I challenged McCullough to stop - whch, surprisingly, she did..........and she dropped something from her mouth.

The lost earring is now found. It is in it proper place. I have learned to be more tidy.
