21 FEBRUARY 2005

I enjoyed a nice weekend. On Saturday, my friend from girlhood, Theresa Jacobi, and I met downtown and queued up at noon to take advantage of free tickets to a new play, Expecting Isabel, that was scheduled at 3:00. Since we had a lot of time, we then walked to Miller's Pub on Wabash and enjoyed a really nice and reasonable lunch......and several drinks a piece. The play, about a Catholic couple in pursuit of pregnancy, was hilarious - maybe it was the drinks but laughter reigned from all corners of the audience, and from the middle, too.

On Sunday, I drove through a gray, misty day to Lisle, IL - about 35 miles. For the past two years, my college classmate's husband has been preparing my income taxes and it is that time, again. We had a lovely wine, delicious hot brie with crackers and wafers, and great conversation. John suggested that I have another glass of wine with the bad news that I owe Uncle Sam over eight hundred dollars. Apparently, DFAS is not withholding enough $$$ for taxes from my Naval Reserve retirement checks. So, I will wait until mid-April to complete the annual obligation to file my tax return.

I have also started to get ready for Cynthia's visit, and the opera, Tosca, next weekend. When she was here for our opera earlier this month, snowy conditions and changed schedules conspired to limit my usually energetic preparations. I never made it to the store but, fortunately, had two nice bottles of wine on hand. We had especially "dirty" martinis made with olive juice - the olives were all gone - and Gordon's gin - Ugh!! I don't know what Cynthia was thinking but, as usual, she was a most gracious guest. My young friend, Noel (deceased Virgil's daughter of 17 eyars), made a batch of her special lasanga. I hope that Cynthia really likes lasanga because we had some before and after the opera and then again the following day before starting our trip to O'Hare Airport for Cynthia's flight home. There will be no repeat of that even though the lasanga (spinach) was excellent and Noel has promised me her special recipe.
