I am so stressed with C&M college process. For those of you whose kids' college days are behind you, color me envious. Maybe it's just the way I'm choosing to deal with it, but I can tell you it is not well. I am facing submitting the FAFSA form for financial aid and the CSS for Vanderbilt's financial aid and they want to know everything....GGGRRRRRR. Anyway, I can't wait until all of this is behind me, and I know John will be happy too! Of course, as always, he is being 1000% supportive...I couldn't ask for better. And I'm glad I have this Blog avenue to air my frustrations....better than a shrink and it's free.
On another note, I have committed John and me to participate in the MS150 April 12 & 13...riding our road bikes from Houston to Austin. Dale, although he cannot be an "official" member of my company's team (For budget reasons, they have to limit it to employees and immediate family members.), is welcome to "ride" with our group, we will transport his sleeping bag and stuff in the truck, and can probably eat dinner with us and find a spot in our tent to rest his sleepy little head after the Saturday 100-mile ride to the campsite in LaGrange. The nice part of this is that we start out together and spread out after a while. Dale should be able to find a group of like-level riders and meet some nice people to boot.
February 10, 2003
Well, there's nothing quite like progress. The FAFSA forms have been filed, the tax returns (CDS/MBS trust & 1040 and JJL/KKL 1040) have been completed, signed, and all mailed except JJL/KKL 1040. We do owe some money, so we will mail April 1. I just needed a signed copy to submit with the CSS (financial aid form for Vanderbilt) for Matthew. The ONLY THING that remains is to write a cover letter to Vanderbilt explaining why Barry cannot complete the non-custodial parent information.
For those of you who did not know, Matthew's school competed against Dallas Jesuit January 31st, and John & I traveled to D to watch the game, and spent the night with the Gavins. It was a delightful time and we stayed up quite late talking. Conversation turned to family and family dynamics. Tim was sharing some tidbits about his siblings and happened to comment how lucky "The Karls" are because we seem so close, and really enjoy getting together with one another....thought I'd share this nice thought from an outside observer.
The next day, John & I stopped by Rita's on the way out of town. Had a wonderfully fun visit. When we first got there, I asked her for some Advil. Before she got the Advil, she removed her M&M candy dispenser from the mantle and brought it to the kitchen counter for me to see how much candy had been eaten since Christmas. While I was waiting for her to bring the Advil, I was helping myself to a few M&M's. I had one M&M remaining in my hand when she handed me the Advil and some water. We were talking, M&M's & Advil are approximate in size, so I just popped that Advil in my mouth and starting chewing. Because of the residual chocolate from the prior M&M, although it was a little crunchy, it was still chocolate, so it took a few chews for the chalky taste to break through the chocolate taste. Yuck! Enough said.
Posted by Kathleen at January 2, 2003 10:45 AMThat all sounds great except for the "probably" part about the dinner and tent--what is he to do if that evening it turns out he can't eat & sleep with you all?
That's fantastic that John is going to do it too. You guys had better start training! If the furthest John had ridden was 44 miles that day you cracked your helmet, then he's got a long way to go to get ready for this . . . easy for me to say since I don't have to train for it . . .
Filling out those forms can drive you up the wall for sure. Just make sure you get them in on time or Matthew will never listen to you again. Wish I could help, but I hope you'll take me up on coming to Austin for a relaxing weekend once everything has been submitted.
Posted by: Elizabeth on January 2, 2003 10:56 AMTo this day, I still don't know how I got admitted to UT. I don't really remember filling out any sort of application - that also goes to the scholarship I recieved as well. One day this whole process will just be an unremembered blur...until then, good luck.
The bike ride sounds like fun. I've been wanting to do a Houston to Austin ride (or vice versa). What are the entry fees? Are there fund raising requirements? I hope you guys enjoy training for it!
Posted by: Jfer on January 2, 2003 01:38 PMAs per e-mail from Kathleen to Dale:
"[You will] need to sign up as an individual and get $300 worth of pledges........Matt told me the registration is $30 by February something, $40 in March, and $50 if you wait until April...so get goin."
Posted by: Elizabeth on January 2, 2003 02:06 PMSo Kathleen, how are things now that Matthew has his application in? Is Courtney all done too? How are the financial aid forms going?
Thinking about you and wishing you good luck!
Posted by: Elizabeth on January 8, 2003 01:18 AMI think that things just magically fell into place when M, J and D went to college. All I can remember is that they went.
The bike ride sounds like fun. Is that what the $300 in pledges are all about?
Posted by: rita on January 19, 2003 06:37 PMSo, were you able to get the financial aid forms off okay? I thought about you & sent you good vibes this last week.
And re your second paragraph, how is your & John's training going for the MS150? I do not know if Dale will be able to participate as he has some issues with his back that he is currently working on with his physical therapist, and it's unclear to me whether he'll be ready for this.
I rode 50 minutes on the trainer Sunday afternoon, and it was great--too cold and wet to ride outdoors, so I just put my heart rate monitor on, something good on the television, and pedaled away. Put my HRM on the setting that showed me how many calories I was burning. It was fun to watch those numbers mount up!
Posted by: Elizabeth on January 28, 2003 01:27 AMKathleen, will you get on the blog!!! It's been a month!!!
I guess the stress has done her in :-(
Posted by: Jfer on February 5, 2003 08:32 AMGlad to see everything has worked out. Do you know when Matthew is suppose to hear anything from Vanderbilt?
I heard about your evening at the Gavins from Mom. She wasn't feeling too good driving home the following day! One day, maybe she'll remember that it isn't a good idea for her to mix her alcohols.
