Someone very wise pointed out to me that some of my blog entries make me seem illiterate and uneducated. Because I like to regard myself as somewhat intelligent, this remark motivates me to correct my personal wrong doing. I do know how to spell words, understand the difference between homonyms, know correct grammar, etc… So, as a way to remediate this problem, I will correct and point out my careless mistakes (which I do understand). Even though these corrections are a secondary way of proving what I know, it is the only thing that I can think of.
I would also like to make a special note that all the entries of my posts are very representative of how I would talk to some of my friends on AOL Instant Messenger. I believe that I have associated blogging as the same thing. When I talk online to people, I am not too worried if I misspelled a word or not, for I believe that it is the content that is of importance.
Someone wise have brought to my attention that a blog is more formal than chatting online. Subconsciously, I knew this, but because I associated the physical act of typing what you think with instant messenging, the entries that I publish were not all that “grammatically correct.”
So, here are the corrections for the past 5 entries:
“A Summation of the Weekend’s Events”
“…in my lastest class…” should read “…in my latest class…”
“Starving, Sleeping, and Sleeping”
“…1 o clock in the morning…” should read “1 o’ clock in the morning”
“Life is Such a Box of Chocolates”
“…It peeks my interest…” should read “…It piques my interest…”
“Having No Time, and Wasting Most of It”
“…but overall, I become convival.” should read
“but overall, I become convivial.”
Well, that is all that I am going to do for now. If I see anymore corrections, I will fix them. I apologize for my carelessness,
Posted by Courtney at November 3, 2003 08:47 PMyour entry today was very succinct and understandable. I have understood the meat of your past entries and I understand how one could associate blogging with IM'g. Now I have one request for you; if you do not want to share the name of the person who pointed all this to you, then could you post a digital image of same?
Or you could just tell what the initials are?
I can make a guess as to who the informer was--but you're not going to give it (the identity) up, are you?
It is true that your blog entries do not reflect your command of the English language very accurately. My suggestion is to learn to type faster! Even when I IM, I type fast enough that I don't have to use the shortcuts. (I acquired my speed when Jennifer & I worked together at the Texas Union and had competitions on Letter Invaders.)
But the main thing is that you continue to enjoy writing in your blog--it's your blog and you can use it how you like, and you can choose your own writing style. The person's comments regarding how the blog reflected on your education were probably right (I frankly had no idea if you were capable of writing properly or not), but if your desire is lessened to write in your blog b/c you feel constraints have been imposed on you by an outside entity, then you probably won't write as much--and I'd miss that. You have to impose your own guidelines, and it is a valid choice to decide that you understand & agree with the criticism but still elect to write as you have always done for your own reasons.
Posted by: Elizabeth on November 3, 2003 09:49 PMIt wasn't me!! We can narrow it down by a process of elimination if other "it wasn't me" entries appear as long as the "it was me" person doesn't lie.
Posted by: Cynthia on November 4, 2003 06:31 AMCourtney, don't appologize. You'll learn that here is a thin line between "wise" and "pedantic and anal" (I should know, I'm often on the wrong side of that line).
It's the content that counts and not the spelling. Sure, pay attention to the later, but don't be too concerned about it. IMO, a typo or two in a post written at a weird hour is completely acceptable :-)
Posted by: Stepan Riha on November 4, 2003 07:10 AMIt was I. And, given all the comments and opinions that have been annotated to her entry, I am very proud that she did not reveal my identity. I prefaced our conversation, by the way, that I was not having the discussion as her "mom" but as a "Karl." I agree with all of you, you are all correct, but I'm the most correct.
Posted by: Author's Mom on November 4, 2003 08:20 AMIf im correct a blog is like a online collection of thoughts. your thoughts. you should be able to write them as you like, not as someone tells you too. its not an essay, correct grammar is hardly neccessary
Posted by: Joe on November 4, 2003 09:51 AM'Someone wise have brought to my attention that a blog is more formal than chatting online'
should read
'Someone wise HAS brought to my...'
=)
But in all truth I agree with Stepan...He is often on the wrong side of wisdom.
Im on a role! (yup i know...roll)
Posted by: Daniel LEE Lucio on November 5, 2003 11:44 AMHAha...danny, you were right. I guess I didn't proofread as well as I should have. Granted, I do understand the difference between the forms of verbs.
Posted by: Courtney on November 5, 2003 12:47 PMCourt,
I confess I have noticed a certain creativity and liberty with the English language in your blog. I have still enjoyed reading your blog and learning about your college experience.
I started my blog with the ATTENTION of learning to write a better story; get my point across with adjetives and nouns and to turn a phrase so colorful yet so precise the reader would understand the feeling behind the thought and not just the semantic.
I'm a much better writer now than I was when I started. I try to pay attention to typos and grammar; it's the math part of the art that is writing but the color of a story will always be most important to me.
I do think the person advising you was in the end doing you a favor; no matter how difficult a pill it may have been to swallow. I look forward to seeing what you write with more attention to the mundane details of syntax and grammar. But I do offer this advice, being a Karl when it comes to editing someone else's blog or verbage is many times tiresome and overrated. Write what you want. My guess is that the process of writing will prove an able teacher.
I also think going back into the past and editing yourself is a mistake. I'm looking forward to seeing your evolution as a blog writer as much as your evolution as a college Freshman.
I have to bite on this one--that word you put in capital letters, Meredith . . . didn't you mean "intention" rather than "attention"? I can't tell if you did that on purpose or not :-(.
I definitely agree with your advice re not editing the past; I had gotten a pretty clear impression from the tone of Courtney's post that she was doing that more as a dig at the advice-giver, but I might have misread that.
And I think you (Meredith) are an excellent writer.
Posted by: Elizabeth on November 5, 2003 07:00 PMUmm...I'm going to be a Karl on this one. Meredith, "adjective" has a 'c' in it.
Farewell.
So many comments, so little time. I feel like I have to contribute again.
Danny, there is an apostrophe in "I'm".
Mermu, that should have been "verbiage", with an "i".
Now if ony I could find something on Elizabeth...
You got a comment from Danny!!!! I'm all kinds of jealous...I guess it would help if I actually posted something new in my blog...
Posted by: Jfer on November 5, 2003 08:43 PMI would be willing to bet that this blog has won the most comments contest in the Karlhub and it's predecessors history. Wow!
Posted by: Aunt Rita on November 5, 2003 10:03 PMSomeone wrote "...pay attention to the later...I think the correct spelling would have been ..."pay attention to the latter." I couldn't help myself. I just had to say that1
Posted by: Kathleen on November 6, 2003 12:48 PMHey!
HUm...
My aunt said the same thing when she visited my blog.... It is because we are so busy, but we want to post, and we do not proof read !
But, hey: It is desrespectable to your reader to not do so... I read that somewhere :)
But again, I don't do it as often as I should!!!!
Take care.. your suite mate....
Karienn
Stepan, I'll be looking over my shoulder for a while now! I think my fingers know when I've mistyped something--they realize it even before I've glanced up and looked at the screen.

Genetic testing on unborn children is, is not ethical
More or less nothing seems important. So it goes. Oh well. It's not important. That's how it is.
